"The Further and Higher Education Act 1992 requires every College in the Further Education sector to have a Governing Body.

The Governing Body of a college is there to represent the interests of the local community in particular and public interest in general. It is there to oversee the way the College is run and to make sure it delivers what its community needs, in a way that reflects the highest professional and ethical standards (including the seven principles of public life: selflessness; integrity; objectivity; accountability; openness; honesty and leadership), and make effective use of the resources it has available. It is accountable for the financial solvency of the College, its sound management and the quality of the service it provides. It is also accountable for the proper use of the public funds entrusted to it and for the proper business management of the commercial activities of the College.

Governors are responsible for the strategic direction of the College. Collectively, individual Governors contribute their professional, specialist and general management skills to the Corporation (and through its committees and working parties) in a non-executive role. A Governor is required to be as flexible as possible in the conduct of their responsibilities and duties, ensuring that the balance of oversight of the College and its business is seen as a positive contribution that does not interfere with the day-to-day management of the College.”
