The Level 5 Art Practice HND allows students to develop a sound understanding of the principles in their ‘specialist pathway’ of study. Students will learn to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving and will be able to perform effectively in their chosen field and have the qualities necessary for employment in the sector.

Students will specialise by committing to specific career path and/or progression route to degree- level study. In addition, the qualifications may provide links to industry-related and employer-supported Apprenticeship schemes that can provide further opportunities for enhanced employability.

Course Overview

At Level 5, there is a required mix of core, specialist and optional units. The core units are:

  • Professional Practice

  • Applied Practice Collaborative Project (Pearson-set)

  • Advanced Art Practice Studies

  • Techniques & Processes

Three more specialist units will supplement the mandatory units, chosen to match the learners’ specialist pathways.

Learners are expected to be in College for up to three days a week and will need to complete regular home study.

While on the course you will complete a variety of projects through which you will extend a range of practical skills and develop your practice through material and contextual investigation. The assignments will be linked to a vocational context, and, whenever possible, working for a real client.

During the programme you will have the opportunity to explore personal themes and concerns, using a range of media. It is a primarily studio based course where you will spend time building an individual portfolio of work.

Where possible there will be organised trips to galleries, studios and museums.
