If you are enthusiastic about art but not sure where to begin, our Level 1 Art & Design Pathway course is the perfect starting point. This is a practical, hands-on programme where you will explore the basic elements of art, experiment with different media and techniques and start to build the confidence and skills needed to progress in the creative industries, you will learn how to develop ideas in sketchbooks, create finished pieces, and understand how artists and designers approach their work. The course is designed to help you discover your strengths and interests in art.
During the course, you will:
Develop your practical skills using a range of art materials, equipment and processes.
Explore the formal elements of art and design including, line, shape, colour theory, value and texture.
Build your creativity through experimentation, problem-solving and project work.
Present your work in a professional way, building a portfolio for future study.
Gain employability skills such as teamwork, communication and time management.
Assessment
Assessment is continuous and based on coursework, there are no written exams. You will be marked on your practical projects, research, and how you record and develop your ideas. Your final portfolio will bring together all the skills you’ve gained during the year.
Work related experience is an essential part of the curriculum allowing you to apply the knowledge you have gained in class and develop a range of creative skills for the industry.
It is a mandatory element of the course and you are required to complete a number of hours in a work placement environment.

No formal qualifications are needed for this course. We’re looking for enthusiasm, creativity and a willingness to try new things. A small selection of your artwork would be helpful at interview but is not essential.
