The construction sector is one of the largest in the UK economy. Almost 3.1 million people work in construction in the UK, accounting for just over 9% of all UK employment. The Extended Certificate in Engineering (Nuclear) delivered at LMC in collaboration with the NCFN holds the potential to open doors to many fantastic and exciting opportunities. There are a wide variety of exciting roles within the sector such as Radiation Protection Technician, Project Control Engineer and Aerospace Engineer.

This course is delivered over three terms with students studying a total of eight units, three in the first term, three in the second and two in the final term. This course is delivered one day a week with block weeks timetabled for practical tasks.

Entry Requirements

To study this course you must have:

  • Five GCSE grades A*/9-C/4, including Maths at grade 5 or above or an appropriate Level 2 qualification with an overall Merit which includes Maths and Science.

  • A recognised Level 3 extended certificate, extended diploma or A levels.

To study A level Maths students are recommended to have a grade 6 or above in GCSE Maths.

All candidates will be interviewed and industrial experience will be taken into account.

Course Activities

You will study a combination of theory, applied theory and practical subjects across a broad range of subjects including:

  • Specialist Engineering Project

  • Engineering Principles

  • Engineering Mathematics

  • Engineering Product Design and Manufacture

  • Principles of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

  • Mechanical Behaviour of Materials

  • Static & Dynamic Mechanical Principles

  • Work Experience in the Engineering Sector

There will be two assessments for each unit and the format of these will be covered in detail in the delivery of each unit.

Study of A level Maths alongside this course is recommended for higher achieving applicants to have the opportunity of obtaining the UCAS point equivalent of three A* at A level.

Progression Opportunities

Upon completion of this course learners may choose to move onto full-time work in the industry or alternatively may choose to progress onto higher education with a degree in Engineering. Past students have gained places at a variety of universities or have gone on to work for well-known Engineering companies such as EDF Energy.

  • Reactor Operator

  • Radiation Protection Technician
