Frequently asked questions

If you're concerned about your finances whilst at College, these Frequently Asked Questions may help to answer some of your concerns, and provide more information on how to apply for help.

What is bursary?

A bursary is a government funded scheme intended to help students overcome financial barriers that they face from attending College.

Am I eligible for the bursary?

Eligibility is based on the annual household income, which must be below £35,000, and evidence of this must be provided with the application. The student must be studying a Further Education funded course (minimum of 30 hours) and be ordinarily resident in the UK.

Speak to our Student Money Adviser in The Hex for further information, advise and guidance.

How do I apply?

Applications are now made online using the LMC Pay My Student portal.

  • Register an account using your LMC student number, date of birth and create a secure password.
  • Click the activation link sent to your personal and LMC student email address.
  • Once activated, log in to your Pay My Student account using the details that you used to register.
  • Once logged in, click the Apply for Bursary to complete and submit your application.

It is important to upload the evidence of your household income to ensure that there won’t be any delay in processing your application.

Please click here for the list of sources of household income.

If you are having difficulties uploading your evidence, please email them to LMC Student Money at studentmoney@lmc.ac.uk. Please make sure that you indicate the student name and student number on your email.

If for any reason you have difficulties in making an online application, please contact our Student Money Adviser on 01524 521469 or email at studentmoney@lmc.ac.uk and they will be happy to help.

What am I entitled to apply for?

As mentioned above, the bursary is intended to assist students in meeting the costs associated with attending the College. Eligible students can get help with the following:

  • Transportation cost between home and College (also meets the mileage criteria of 1.5 miles from College)
  • Lunches in College
  • The cost of uniforms, equipment, and essential trips, that are part of your course
  • Childcare expense

Receipt of the bursary is dependent on agreed standards of attendance and behaviour.

When can I apply for bursary?

Bursary applications for students starting in September can submit their applications starting July. You can submit your applications throughout the year but we suggest that you do it before September, as funds are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

I’m a returning student, do I need to apply again?

Yes, you need to apply again. However, there’s no need for you to register an account again on Pay My Student, and since you were previously in receipt of bursary, you only need to provide an updated evidence to confirm your current circumstances.

If you have any questions or clarifications, please contact our Student Money Adviser on 01524 521469 or email at studentmoney@lmc.ac.uk and they will be happy to help.

My bursary application has been approved. How do I receive the money?

The bursary is intended to assist students in meeting the costs associated with attending the College. It is used to provide bus passes to help students travel from their home to College, pay for meals each day the student is timetabled to attend College, and help pay for their essential course expenses like uniform, equipment, and compulsory educational trips. You will only receive money when you attend your work placement, which is £3.00 each day that you attended your placement.

If you think you should receive funds into your bank account, please contact Student Money on 01524 521469 or email studentmoney@lmc.ac.uk

What if my application is turned down?

You have the right to appeal. If students feel that their bursary application has not been dealt with fairly or if they are unhappy with a decision regarding their application, they can email an appeal request to studentmoney@lmc.ac.uk. Their appeal request will be reviewed the Deputy Engagement Manager and Head of Engagement. The student will be notified of the decision of the Appeals panel in writing.
