My experiences and adventures in the past, have given me a real appreciation for the incredible opportunities available within the animal industry, as well as the hard work, resilience and determination needed to succeed.
Stephen works at Lancaster & Morecambe College as a Lecturer in the Animal Studies department mainly on the Animal Studies Pathway Level 1 course. He has a wealth of industry experience from around the world as his route into Animal Studies includes, dog sledding in Sweden and working alongside veterinary students at a zoo in the South of France, to wildlife conservation in South Africa and sheep mustering in the Australian outback.

Having worked at LMC for the past year, Stephen manages the Pathway Level 1 course, as well as teaches on the Land Based Studies Level 1 and Animal Care Level 2 courses. His teaching covers a wide range of areas, including animal health, husbandry, welfare and nutrition, and he helps his students to develop their confidence, communication and the wider skills needed for their future careers.
Stephen says that most rewarding part of teaching for him is seeing his students grow in confidence, develop their own characters and recognise their own potential. He always encourages his students to appreciate that setbacks and rejection can be difficult, but they are not the end of the story.
Some of my own experiences and challenges as a student have shaped the way I teach today, which gives me a strong desire to help my students believe in themselves and recognise that they are capable of more than they may initially think.
My advice to anyone considering an Animal Studies course is simple: don’t wait until you feel ready. Most students never feel completely ready; they may feel curious, nervous or unsure, and that is completely normal. What matters is being willing to turn up, get involved and give it a go. Applying for an Animal Studies course with LMC is not just about developing your practical knowledge and skills — it is also about discovering what you are capable of.

No two days are the same when working in the Animal unit. I love looking after all the animals, and there is such a community feel around the College, like we are one family.
We have a very knowledgeable and dedicated team from different areas of the animal industry. We offer a range of courses in Animal Studies at different levels to cater for a wide range of students. Practically, you will work with a range of animals on site, spend time in our laboratories and hone your skills further during independent work-related experience. Working with animals can be a fun and rewarding career but it does involve hard graft and dedication!
I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience of animals with students and seeing a learners journey as they make progress. The best part of teaching the course would definitely be the experience we offer learners, it's a unique and hands on way of developing their knowledge of working with animals.
If you are interested in working with animals, this is a great course for you! As not only do you gain the knowledge and practical skills to work with animals, but you also gain the employability skills to be able to work in teams and work within the industry. It's important to remember that jobs in the animal industry are not just about working with animals, you need to have the skills to deal with people too!
