This course is designed to help you upskill and gain employment in the Residential Childcare industry. We will help you take your first steps into this specialist world, looking at safeguarding, behaviour, and the legislation that guides those who work with vulnerable children and young people.

You will undertake classroom taught sessions around these subjects, complete workbooks, and present back to your classmates about the subjects you have undertaken.

You will need to attend the course for two weeks, for eight sessions, taking place from Monday to Thursday, 10am to 3pm.

Entry Requirements

To study this course you must:

  • Be 21 or over

  • Enjoy working with children/young people

  • Have a commitment to study (attendance, punctuality & behaviour)

  • Be able to work independently

  • Have good interpersonal skills

  • Be able to present to a small group

Course Activities

Sessions on this course include:

  • Introduction to residential childcare

  • Behaviour and how you can support yourself

  • Safeguarding

  • Understanding how to handle information in social care settings

  • Legislation in residential childcare (quality standards and regulations)

  • Question and answer session with staff who work in the residential sector

  • Child development and cognitive development

  • Interview skills and interview practice

  • Rights and responsibilities in the workplace

If you successfully complete the course you will achieve a Certificate in Work Preparation (Acentis) and a Lancaster & Morecambe College/Residential Child Care Forum certificate in Residential Childcare.

Industry Links

Throughout the course you will benefit from delivery from trainers who have worked in the industry and so can give you an insight into their experiences. You will also have the opportunity for a question and answer session with current staff members employed in the residential sector. They will be able to give you a ‘real time’ insight into the industry, its challenges, and how they have adapted to overcome these.

Progression Opportunities

At the end of the course, if successful, you will be able to present your CV to a number of local residential providers who could offer you an interview for a role within their provision.

This course costs £0.00, including exam fees.

You may be eligible for free study if you are 23 or under and this is your first full Level 2 or 3 course. Alternatively, if you are unemployed, receiving an eligible benefit, and taking the course to help you find employment.
