Apprentices will work with children, young people and families, including carers, to achieve positive and sustainable change in their lives. Apprentices will be skilled in recognising and assessing the complex needs of children, young people and families and will agree any specific interventions or referrals. The apprentice’s approach will be one of respectful curiosity that challenges and supports children, young people and families to achieve their potential and stay safe.

5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher including Maths and English OR a Level 2 related qualification PLUS grade C/4 or higher in BOTH Maths and English.
Relevant work experience will also be considered
Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.
• Employment should be for a minimum of 30 hours per week, with training in the workplace
• Assessor visits in the workplace every 3 – 4 weeks
• Functional Skills level 2 in Maths, English and ICT including attendance at workshops

The apprentice could be working in a number of settings such as a children’s home, a residential special school or a secure children’s home. They will take the lead in developing and delivering the child’s placement plan and will work with the child to support their health, education, social and day to day needs, playing a significant role in helping them to thrive and fulfil their potential.
Mandatory Qualification: Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare
This course is continuously assessed in the workplace using a range of methods including portfolio building, on the job assessment professional discussion, direct observation and witness testimony.
The apprentice must achieve the following on-programme assessment requirements prior to Gateway:
• Completion of the mandatory qualification specified in the option chosen.
• Level 2 English and Maths
• Completion of a portfolio to support the competence interview.
The decision to take an apprentice through Gateway is made between the employer, Independent Training Provider and Apprentice. The apprentice must have achieved all the required on-programme elements before they enter Gateway, including the following:
• Holds a current DBS Certificate
Once you have gained employment you could start this programme at any time of the year.
We expect most Apprentices on the Level 3 programme to complete in 24 months, depending upon your skills, qualifications and how quickly you progress.
On completion of this course you will receive Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare.
