My favourite part of this role is working with such an amazing team here at Lancaster & Morecambe College, and also being able to pass on my industry knowledge to all my students and support them in their journey to becoming a Beauty Therapist.
Sandra O'Hara works with the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy Team and teaches students on the Beauty Therapy Level 3 full time course and Nail Services City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma part time evening course.
Sandra joined the team as a Beauty Therapy tutor at Lancaster & Morecambe College in 2020 after doing a short period of voluntary work in the department. She throughly enjoyed working in an educational environment and so decided to complete the Certificate in Education qualification and become a qualified lecturer. Having previously worked in the beauty industry Sandra has a vast experience of many different beauty techniques and procedures, which she covers in her teaching at College. These beauty techniques include:
Sandra is also a member of The Beauty Guild, and teaches on the Beauty Guild Accredited Courses which are suitable as Continued Professional Development (CPD) to upskill qualified therapists or those working towards a regulated qualification in Beauty Therapy

When asked what advice Sandra would give to someone applying for a Beauty Therapy course, she replied:
Do it and don't hold back! There are many fantastic career opportunities waiting for you in the beauty therapy industry which can take you anywhere in the world. You must however be keen and hardworking as the beauty industry isn't easy, but can be extreamly rewarding.
If you are interested in working with animals, this is a great course for you! As not only do you gain the knowledge and practical skills to work with animals, but you also gain the employability skills to be able to work in teams and work within the industry. It's important to remember that jobs in the animal industry are not just about working with animals, you need to have the skills to deal with people too!
I enjoy being part of the team and thinking of new ways to support local businesses in realising their potential. Watching learners transition from a one-day course to gaining qualifications motivates me to continue teaching at LMC.
In my role as a course tutor I’m responsible for ensuring that my students develop in many areas, and not just Hairdressing. I like to encourage my students to improve their well-being as well as support them with their personal development and learning journey, to gain the knowledge to be successful within their course to achieve the qualifications they need to progress in the industry.
I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience of animals with students and seeing a learners journey as they make progress. The best part of teaching the course would definitely be the experience we offer learners, it's a unique and hands on way of developing their knowledge of working with animals.
The course gives people experiences of business in many forms which can be used in a huge variety of possible future careers – past students have gone on to work in sectors as diverse as fashion, charities, social media, nuclear energy, defence manufacturing and the public sector.
My role is to work alongside the tutors and students to ensure the work placements are secured, completed and recorded in line with procedural requirements. This is a simple description, as there is a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure this happens! I see good communication, administration, attention to detail and patience as key attributes of the role.
