My favourite part of working at Lancaster & Morecambe college is watching students progress and supporting them with their learning. I also love knowing they are learning within a hairdressing environment and being able to see them develop their skills and knowledge in hairdressing.
Leigh started her journey volunteering at Lancaster & Morecambe College to complete her assessors award in 2019. She then worked as a technical demonstrator and assessor alongside her teaching degree whilst also independently teaching, as she knew that was the career path she wanted to follow. Leigh is now a fully qualified hairdressing tutor, teaching all aspects of hairdressing.

Having experince in a busy salon outside of her teaching job, Leigh gets to keep up her training in the forever growing hairdressing industry and bring her skills into her lessons with the students here at LMC.
I currently work in a very busy hair salon where I learn the new trends and latest methods of colouring, cutting, hair styling and hair extensions. I also visit hair educators regular to expand my knowledge and experience.
Leigh plans for her upcoming lessons by making it personal to the individual students and includes appropriate activities and learning resources to teach the class. she is responsible for making sure the students have the underpinning knowledge that relates to the awarding body and course requirements.
I demonstrate the practical skills they need to progress on the course and support students in practical and theory logging the assessments.
When asked what she would say to someone wanting to study hairdressing, she said:
I would recommend for anyone interested to study hairdressing. It is a trade that will always be needed and is a flexible career allowing you to work around a variety of lifestyles. I would recommend a Level 3 to further your qualifications as this can develop into a teaching role.
I love to see the difference between a student starting the course and then when they leave their course. They always gain confidence thanks to their new skills and it's amazing to see them leave with their qualification knowing that I have contributed in helping them achieve it.
I love working at Lancaster & Morecambe College with such an amazing team that are passionate about delivering outstanding teaching across the departments. The Apprenticeship courses at LMC are well developed programmes that offer students amazing opportunities and experiences, whilst allowing them to earn while they learn as they progress through the Apprenticeship.
In my role as a course tutor I’m responsible for ensuring that my students develop in many areas, and not just Hairdressing. I like to encourage my students to improve their well-being as well as support them with their personal development and learning journey, to gain the knowledge to be successful within their course to achieve the qualifications they need to progress in the industry.
I enjoy teaching this qualification a lot because all the apprentices show a real passion for the hairdressing industry. They all leave the course with the skills and knowledge to build their own client bases or set up their own businesses within the hair industry. Seeing the learners confidence grow more and more each week is my favourite part of the role.
