This course will provide you with a knowledge base for a range of careers in the animal management industry with a specific focus on wildlife, ecology and conservation. It will provide specialist studies relevant within the industry and help you develop a range of skills and techniques essential for successful performance in working life.

Who is this Course for?

This course is designed for 16-18 year old and adult learners, the course will include a substantial amount of careers related learning designed to support progression to the suitable next step, this could include educational trips, employability skills and employer encounters such as guest speakers. For 16-18 year old learners this will be delivered as a study programme which includes math and English where applicable and work experience.

What progression and career opportunities will I gain?

The course could provide progression to:

• HNC Animal Behaviour & Welfare at LMC

• Foundation Degree in Animal Management

• Other Level 4 qualifications

• Level 3 NVQs in Animal Welfare and Management, Pet Care and Supply and Animal Training

What are the entry requirements for the course?

5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher including Maths and English OR a Level 2 related qualification PLUS grade C/4 or higher in English, Maths and Science

Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.

What does the course involve?

Examples of units you may study include:

• Animal Feeding & Nutrition

• Animal Behaviour & Communication

• Animal Welfare & Breeding

• Biological Systems of Animals

• Animal Health & Husbandry

• Work Related Experience

• Ecology and Conservation

• Wildlife Rehabilitation

A work placement has to be completed as a mandatory part of the course; the placement should be arranged by the learner themselves and may involve access to animals from the categories of:

• Large animals

• Companion animals

• Rodents

• Exotic species

All LMC students will receive tutorial support.

How will I be Assessed?

This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including structured project work, assignments and observation of practical work. There may be some short tests. Some units may be assessed by external exam and control external assessment. N.B. Assessments are based on the requirements of the awarding body and are subject to change.

What qualification will I get?

On completion of the one year programme you will receive an Advanced Technical Diploma in Animal Management. If you then go on to complete the second year of the programme you will receive an Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management.
