This course will provide you with the base knowledge required for a range of careers in the Animal Management industry with a specific focus on wildlife, ecology and conservation. It will provide specialist studies relevant within the industry and help you develop a range of skills and techniques essential for successful performance in working life.
The timetable will cover 3 days per week in College; lessons are classroom-based theory lessons with some practical workshop sessions where you will gain the required underpinning knowledge of domestic and wild animals and the practical husbandry skills with a variety of small animals. It also expected that 10-15 hours per week of home study is completed.
In Year 1, the qualification you will gain is the City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Animal Management and in Year 2 you will gain the City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management. Both courses are assessed by formal written exams, formal synoptic practical assessments, written assignments, projects, coursework and observation of practical competence.
To study this course, you must:
Show enthusiasm for the subject area
Demonstrate a commitment to study
Be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Have good interpersonal skills
Be able to work independently
You must also have 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher including English and Maths OR a related Level 2 qualification PLUS grade C/4 or higher in English, Maths and science.
This course includes a substantial amount of careers related learning designed to support progression to the suitable next step, this could include educational trips, employability skills sessions and employer encounters such as guest speakers. For 16-18 year old learners this will be delivered as a study programme which includes English and Maths where applicable.
Work related experience is a mandatory part of the qualification - you must complete a minimum of 150 hours of work within a Land-based industry setting. This will take place 1 day per week in addition to the 3 timetabled days in College.

Work related experience is an essential part of the Eden Land-based & Animal Studies curriculum allowing students to apply the knowledge they have gained in class and develop the work behaviours required for the industry.
It is a mandatory element of the course and students are required to complete a minimum number of 150 hours in a Land-based work environment.
Support is available from our Work Placement Co-ordinator but students are required to find and contact potential employers independently.
Upon course completion you may choose to go onto higher education or alternatively, you may begin your career in the Land-based & Animal Care industry. Exciting job roles in this industry include:
