IOSH Managing Safely

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of health and safety management in the workplace. It is aimed at all employees in any organisation, but particularly team leaders, supervisors and managers. This course will providing the knowledge, skills and confidence to contribute towards an organisation’s health and safety agenda.

The course is arranged into seven modules:

  1. Introducing managing safely
  2. Understanding your responsibilities
  3. Identifying hazards
  4. Assessing risks
  5. Controlling risks
  6. Investigating accidents and incidents
  7. Measuring performance.

There are no entry requirements for this certificate, however it is important that you have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the course. To achieve your IOSH Managing safely certificate you must complete a 30-question exam and a worked based risk assessment.

IOSH Working Safely

Short entry level course covering the essentials of health and safety in the workplace. It is aimed at all employees in all types of organisations. 

The course is divided into 4 modules: -

  1. Introducing working safely
  2. Defining hazards and risk
  3. Identifying common hazards
  4. Improving safety performance

There are no entry requirements for this certificate, however it is important that you have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the course. The assessment will involve a 30 question, multi-format exam with hazard spotting exercises.

IOSH Leading Safely

The IOSH Leading Safely course covers everything you need to know to boost productivity, increase profits, enhance corporate reputation and strengthen your brand by improving your organisation’s safety and health practices. This course is aimed at anyone in a senior management or leadership role.

The course covers

  1. Safety and health and what it means for different leadership roles
  2. The responsibilities and behaviours of a leader
  3. What effective safety and health leadership looks like
  4. How to get things right
  5. How leaders can make improvements
  6. The benefits of effective safety and health leadership

There are no entry requirements for this qualification, however it is important that you have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. You will use the diagnostic tool, accessed via a mobile app, to identify your current safety and health position against a set of critical questions. The tool recommends the actions you should take. At the end of the course you will make a commitment to a personal action plan to improve your safety and health management, and your organisations’ safety and health management.

IOSH Safety for Executives and Directors

The IOSH Safety for Executives and Directors course provides a complete understanding of the moral, legal and business case for proactive safety, health and risk management, strategic safety and health management, and its integration into business management systems and procedures. This course is intended for senior staff with operational or strategic accountability for an organisation. 

The course covers:

  1. Module 1: The moral, legal and financial case
  2. Module 2: PLAN – Planning for Health and Safety
  3. Module 3: DO – Implementing Health and Safety
  4. Module 4: CHECK – Monitoring Health and Safety Performance
  5. Module 5: ACT – Improving Health and Safety Performance

There are no entry requirements for this qualification, however it is important that you have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. To complete this course, you must pass the IOSH Safety for Executives and Directors personal commitment assignment, which consists of an action plan relating to the learning on the course; you must write up to three actions that you commit to taking in your workplace appropriate to your level of responsibility. Each commitment must state an outcome goal, a performance goal and a process goal that is relevant to your level of responsibility within your organisation.

The UKSPF project is pleased to support this new half day introductory training course created using first hand insights from people with lived experience. The training is designed to help employers, managers, HR / team leaders and mental health first aiders to positively address the way Cancer is navigated in their workplace. This short course will help enable you to cultivate and encourage an inclusive work environment where staff are better equipped with the skills and confidence to support colleagues affected by Cancer.

Food Allergen Awareness and Food Safety in Catering

Food Allergen Awareness

Full day course • 9:30am - 4pm

The Qualsafe Food Allergen Awareness (Level 2 RQF) qualification enables you to attain knowledge of food allergens and food intolerances alongside the importance of good practice so that safe food is produced and sold.
This regulated and nationally recognised qualification has been specifically designed for people who are working in, or preparing to work in a food handling, food retail or food manufacturing role.

On completion of this course you will gain a strong  understanding of food allergens and food intolerances, the effects these can have on individuals, how to control cross-contamination from allergenic ingredients and how to provide accurate food allergen information.

Food Safety in Catering

Did you know that there are an estimated 1 million cases of food poisoning in the UK each year?

EU and UK regulations state that all food handlers must receive appropriate training in food safety practices relevant to their duties. However, having  a good understanding of food safety practices is not only a legal requirement, it is also essential in protecting the health of both consumers and food handlers.

The QA Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering (RQF) is a regulated and nationally recognised qualification for people working, or planning to work, in the food catering industry. The qualification is also ideal for those who come into contact with food handling areas due to the nature of their work, such as pest control officers and delivery personnel.

Successful candidates will gain a strong understanding of the importance of food safety, including correct food handling practices and measures to reduce the risk of contamination.

Manual Handling, Health & Safety and Risk Assessment Workshops new

Lancaster & Morecambe College are pleased to offer these short workshops to support you, your business and employees in working safely. All workshops are available to be delivered in the workplace or at the Employer Hub at LMC. 

Manual Handling

This short half day workshop is designed to raise awareness, help reduce risk and encourage safer lifting techniques. 

The workshop consists of the following units: 

  • The potential hazards of manual handling in the workplace 
  • Legislation and guidance 
  • Controlling and reducing the risk of harm 
  • Manual handling techniques 

There will be an opportunity for some light practical exercises but these are optional.  The course will run from 9am – 12pm with a short break. There is a multi-choice question paper assessment at the end.

Understanding Substance Use and Misuse (Young Persons)

If you are a professional working in the education sector you will be acutely aware of the many challenges and temptations students encounter. Today the pressures being faced by our next generation cannot be underestimated and with this pressure comes the increased temptation and risks posed by Substances. If you feel that increasing your knowledge and developing your understanding of substance use and misuse fits in with your ongoing work and CIPD then please consider the following training.  

The following topics will be delivered in a focused 3hr session, the delivery will be interactive, informative and challenging and will consider contemporary issues affecting students journeys with substance use and misuse. 

  1. Young people Substance Use and Misuse 
    Objectives – To put some context to the issue of substance use and misuse. How and why does substance use progress from exploration and experimentation through to recreational use and possible dependency. What are the factors that contribute to the decision-making process? 
  2. Signs and Symptoms of Drug Use.
    Objective – to increase awareness regarding the physical, psychological and emotional signs and symptoms. Develop insight into the potential consequences and know what to look for should an someone be taking substances. To increase awareness of the key characteristics of substances. To improve understanding of the Risks and Consequences. 
  3. Treatment Models, Drugs the Law, Support.
    Objective – to gain a greater understanding of the theoretical basis of models for treatment, increase knowledge of the legal status and classification of substances and the implications for taking them, and explore what support is available for professionals, students, families and careers. To develop strategies to work with potential problems that may arise.

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Name the most common substances in use by age and describe their effects 
  • Identify the reason why some may choose to use substances 
  • Recognise the risk factors for Substance Use and Misuse 
  • Describe common patterns of use amongst certain age groups including poly-drug use 
  • Recognsie prevention, recovery and harm reduction intervention 
  • Identify effective strategies to work with individuals that support positive choices.
