Even though I only work with learners through distance learning, it is possible to establish a rapport with a learner that has been assigned to me – it is wonderful to help a person develop their confidence through the many distance learning awards we have on offer and to watch their work go from strength to strength.
Elaine joined Lancaster & Morecambe College in 2018 as a Part Time Work Based Skills Advisor, Health and Social Care for the Distance Learning courses alongside her advisory role for the Alzheimer's Society, as she was missing working in education. The combination of the two roles has allowed her to use her knowledge to educate and support others who want to develop their learning and this combination of two different jobs works brilliantly for her.
We asked Elaine what her favourite part of her role is and she said...
I started working at LMC in April 2018, having worked in a number of FE colleges over the years. I wanted to remain part of the FE community whilst also working in the health and social care sector. Even though I only work with learners through Distance Learning, it is possible to establish a rapport with a learner who has been assigned to me. I really like to see the learners I am allocated develop their confidence as they progress in the distance learning award they have chosen – particularly those who have returned to education for the first time since leaving full time education. I like trying to make a connection with them and to share my own knowledge and experience with them to help them gain a better understanding of the underpinning knowledge of the vocational qualification.
Elaine's teaching activities include tutor assessments and internal moderation of a wide range of Distance Learning courses. from Level 1, 2 and 3. Some of the most popular courses we offer as distance learning are the courses touching on the topic of mental health awareness and care. Elaine has an indepth knowledge particulary of this topic as she is also a qualified registered Mental Health Nurse and holds her NVQ Level 3 in Early Years.
We asked Elaine, what she would say to someone thinking of taking part in a Distance Learning course and she said...
I would say have a go! The Distance Learning awards are great for those who want a flexible way of learning, be it new knowledge or as a refresher. These courses are excellent for adult learners who are perhaps busy at work or with other responsibilities such as a caring role. We are a very understanding and listening team and would understand if they needed some additional time – life goes on.
The course materials are excellent; the Distance Learning team will help and support you to learn at your own pace and in your own way. If you are interested in working in the Health and Social Care sector or if you would like to refresh your knowledge there is something for everyone.
I’ve seen first hand how learners from all backgrounds thrive here at College, and it’s amazing to watch their confidence grow as they realise what they’re capable of. Education really can open doors, and LMC is a great place to start that journey.
Working with my learners and seeing their knowledge and confidence build throughout their learning is great to see. I really enjoy it when they can relate what we have learnt to their own working roles, and develop this even further to see how everything intertwines within the industry.
