The vocational skills development we offer at College are exceptional. The partners we work with are excellent and will help the students to develop further, as well as the opportunities we provide such as the Alicante trip are amazing, and you would struggle to find another college or sixth form that offers similar opportunities.
Kane started working at Lancaster & Morecambe College as a Sports Tutor in August 2022 on the Sport Coaching and Development Level 3 course. He was drawn to the job role because the College was developing in so many areas and had an excellent reputation within the community. The LMC Sports Department is well known for its vocational skill development, quality of content delivery, and very high standards of work from both learners and staff alike.
The Sports Department also had a good reputation for working well with smaller groups and having an excellent level of contact with learners. Previously I taught at Runshaw and Preston Colleges and studied at Newton Rigg and UCLan (now University of Lancashire), who all worked with much larger groups, so I knew LMC was the correct place for me where the group sizes were smaller, I knew how good this was for learning and helping learners develop higher order thinking.
The opportunity to work with the Morecambe Scholars and with HE learners was also another big draw for me, because I aim to do my PHD at some point and become a university lecturer alongside being a professional football coach working in the elite game.
As a Sports Tutor, Kane's role involves planing, delivering and reviewing the theory and practical sessions for students, across the whole range of Sport and Uniformed Protective Services courses at College. He uses a range of delivery techniques with a preference for andragogy based learning over pedagogy, meaning he encourages the students to take ownership of their learning. Kane uses a range of teaching tasks with students such as group tasks, research tasks, creative tasks, quizzes, role plays and presentations etc, to ensure that his student remain engaged in his sessions.
I really enjoy the teaching and learning element of my job, particularly working with students and building a positive report, delivering content and helping them to learn and develop in subjects they find interesting and want to pursue a career in. Some of the best things about the Sports course at LMC are the vocational skills development we offer which is exceptional, also the partners we work with are excellent and will help our students develop further.
The overseas opportunities we provide, such as the Alicante trip, are amazing and you would struggle to find another college/sixth form that offers similar opportunities. Our links with the community and HE establishments are excellent, the standard of teaching and learning we provide is very good and we are working on developing things further with new and exciting partnerships, a new sports qualification and staff engaging in CPD that is developing them further to provide an even better experience for prospective students.
Kane has gained invaluable experience and knowledge during his career in working with adults, primary school children and college students, and explains,
I have managed girls and women’s teams for most of my coaching career and also enjoy coaching the girls football team at LMC, which fits in well with my experience and helps me develop my coaching skills further. Finally, I also enjoy the work we do within the community, particularly the school's sports and althetics events. As well as tutoring at LMC I am also the Head Coach at the Sir Tom Finney Preston Soccer Centre, which I have done for nearly 9 years. I have experience of working in elite women’s football having managed the Hindley Juniors Women in the North-West Women’s Regional League and the UCLan Women’s football and futsal teams for years. I am currently an age group coach at Orange Soccer Academy, working with very talented young football players, some of which are in professional academies such as Morecambe, Preston, Fleetwood, Blackpool and AFC Fylde. In the past I worked with semi-professional athletes helping them with their strength and conditioning and injury recovery at Titan Strength Academy alongside working as a regular PT there. All this additional experience helps me in my current job and allows me to pass on my knowledge to my students.
In my role as a course tutor I’m responsible for ensuring that my students develop in many areas, and not just Hairdressing. I like to encourage my students to improve their well-being as well as support them with their personal development and learning journey, to gain the knowledge to be successful within their course to achieve the qualifications they need to progress in the industry.
Welding particularly is like lego for adults – its great fun making things. Whereas Engineering will teach you why things are made the way they are and a combination of both will give you the skills to make almost anything you can think of! Why not give it a go!
The course gives people experiences of business in many forms which can be used in a huge variety of possible future careers – past students have gone on to work in sectors as diverse as fashion, charities, social media, nuclear energy, defence manufacturing and the public sector.
We have a very knowledgeable and dedicated team from different areas of the animal industry. We offer a range of courses in Animal Studies at different levels to cater for a wide range of students. Practically, you will work with a range of animals on site, spend time in our laboratories and hone your skills further during independent work-related experience. Working with animals can be a fun and rewarding career but it does involve hard graft and dedication!
My favourite aspect of my role is seeing learners who struggle to believe in themselves when they first begin their journey at LMC, but eventually realise that they are very capable. It is a lightbulb moment when they realise they can be or do anything they want to. Learners walk through our gates unsure of themselves and sometimes struggle to believe in their abilities, but by the end of their journey they walk out of LMC confident and ready to take on the world.
I enjoy being part of the team and thinking of new ways to support local businesses in realising their potential. Watching learners transition from a one-day course to gaining qualifications motivates me to continue teaching at LMC.
