This qualification develops practical teaching skills. It prepares teachers to deliver their specialist subject in a range of teaching and contexts, with a focus on the Further Education Sector. It covers the roles of a teacher/trainer, delivery of education in different contexts, assessing learners, and developing resources.

You will undertake a minimum of 30 hours of teaching, preferably with a range of individuals and groups and at more than one level. These hours can be completed as part of an employment contract, or on a voluntary basis. The taught sessions are held in the evening (usually Tuesdays or Wednesdays) for a full academic year.

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training replaces the Level 3 and Level 4 Certificates in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS).

Entry Requirements

You will need:

  • A Level 3 qualification and/or extensive industry experience in the teaching subject

  • The ability to work at Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE grade C) in both maths and English

  • The capacity to teach for a minimum of 30 hours during the academic year

  • To be at least 19 years of age

Course Activities

You will study the following mandatory units:

  • Planning to meet the needs of learners

  • Delivering education and training

  • Assessing learners

  • Using resources for education and training

There will also be optional units, which may differ depending on your teaching environment. All LMC students will receive tutorial support.

Assessment includes a minimum of 3 observed teaching sessions, plus a portfolio of evidence which may include assignments, presentations, reports, witness testimonies and recorded discussions.

You will be expected to undertake an extensive amount of course work and supplementary study on this course.

Industry Links

The NCFE Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is accepted by many FE colleges as a full teaching qualification, alongside industry experience in vocational subjects.

Progression Opportunities

You can find opportunities with further education colleges, sixth form colleges, adult education centres, independent training providers and offender education schemes.

With experience, you can become a senior lecturer, head of department, education programme co-ordinator, or move into management. You could also become a training assessor.
