I love working with such keen and dedicated staff and students. I also like how every day is different because we attract such a wide range of students including year 11 from local high schools aged 16-18 who apply to the full time courses, to adult students who attend the part time courses. It’s nice to work with so many people from all different backgrounds and cultures who share a passion for cooking.

Alessandro Possamai is a tutor in the Hospitality & Catering department at Lancaster & Morecambe College (LMC).

Alessandro started at LMC in December 2021, after teaching at a college in Manchester for a few years, following extensive industry-experience running his own businesses for 11 years including an outside catering company, and a coffee house with a deli. Prior to LMC, Alessandro also enjoyed lecturing in various colleges as a guest speaker, as well as teaching barista skills for front of house qualifications.

During his career so far, Alessandro has worked across the UK including Scotland, the Lake District and the Ribble Valley as well as abroad in the French Alps. Alessandro praises the Hospitality & Catering industry for the variety of work locations and environments available to him, stating:

This industry is so broad with workplaces including hotels, casinos and cruise ships to nursing homes, prisons and hospitals – and that’s not including the 5-star luxury resorts and Michelin Star restaurants. I have friends that work all over the world, across a whole range of environments because of this industry.

Living and growing up in the area has assisted Alessandro in his role as he has a broad knowledge of the local business community which helps when supporting learners into employment.

When explaining his favourite part of his role, Alessandro said:

I love working with such keen and dedicated staff and learners. I also like how every day is different because we attract such a wide range of learners including year 10/11s from local high schools, aged 16-18 Full Time students and Part Time adult learners. It’s nice to see people from all different backgrounds and cultures sharing a common passion for cooking.

As a tutor, Alessandro is currently teaching a range of topics as he focusses on the foundations of cookery and culinary skills with his Full Time learners and the refining of pastry skills with one of his adult learner groups.

Despite being a Full Time tutor, Alessandro often works at weekends catering for weddings and events to ensure he has continuous professional development, allowing him to bring the most up to date industry techniques and knowledge to his teaching.

When asked what he would say to someone applying to a course in Hospitality & Catering, Alessandro said:

This industry demands dedication, hard work and a willingness to work long hours but the rewards can be so fantastic! Every day is different and the industry opens so many doors across the world – this industry also has some of the highest paying jobs in the UK
