Charlotte-Poppy Wells

Doing the course opened a door to a range of possibilities and facilitated me being able to go to University.

Charlotte-Poppy first came to Lancaster and Morecambe College in 2019 and chose to study Health and Social Care Level 3 after completing her GCSE's at a local secondary school.

We asked Charlotte-Poppy why she chose this course and she said,

I chose this course because I had an interest in healthcare and knew that I wanted to puruse a career in healthcare.

Due to Charlotte-Poppy knowing what career she wanted, she was able to come down to one of our open evenings and speak with the tutors to find out more about her future and what the course entailed. Our open evenings are great for anyone who knows what they want to do and also those that are unsure, to come and see the whole campus, our facilities and explore what options are available to them.

I chose LMC as on the open day the tutors were really supportive and friendly.

The Health and Social Care Level 3 course is a popular course at Lancaster and Morecambe College due to its wide content coverage, understanding of the careers available and the support from tutors who used to work in industry themselves. This course also includes placement opportunities so that students can learn in College as well as out in industry for a full experience of the roles they might be moving into. Charlotte-Poppy particuluarly liked this part of her course and when we asked her what the most enjoyable parts of her course were, she said,

Learning about different areas of healthcare and what health and social care covers. I also enjoyed learning how health and social care has developed through time.

Once Charlotte-Poppy completed her course, she had gained valuable skills such as great communication, teamwork and time management which she was able to transfer to her time at University. We asked her what else she took away from her time at LMC and she said, 

It helped me gain confidence and become more independant in my knowledge and skills. I also gained friendships for life.

Charlotte-Poppy's current role has combined her skills and knowledge gained at both College and University to enable her to become a Band 5 Registered Neonatal Nurse, caring for premature and sick babies as well as supporting their families. Her role involves monitoring and assessing babies, administering medications, providing feeding support, carrying out clinical skills and observing any changes in a baby's condition. Charlotte-Poppy also works closely with the wider multi-disciplinary teams to support parents throughout their baby's neonatal journey.

We asked Charlotte-Poppy what her biggest accomplishment is since leaving College and she said, 

My biggest accomplishment since leaving college has been progressing through university and qualifying as a Registered Neonatal Nurse. During my university training I was able to complete placements at one of Europe's biggest children’s hospitals.

We asked Charlotte-Poppy what would you say to someone who was thinking about studeying at LMC?

I would definitely recommend the course to anyone who is considering it, especially if they are interested in progressing into a career in healthcare. The course gave me a strong foundation in the knowledge and skills I needed before going on to university to study nursing. It also helped me develop confidence, independence and good study skills.
